Protecting Our Planet: Helping Animals and Nature
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about protecting the environment and animals.
- Talk about why it’s important to help animals and nature.
- Read about the importance of national parks.
- Listen to a conversation about saving forests.
- Write about how we can protect endangered animals.
Key Words:
- Endangered species: Animals or plants in danger of disappearing forever.
- Habitat: The natural home of a plant or animal.
- Preservation: Keeping something safe from harm.
- National park: A special place protected by the government for animals and plants.
- Biodiversity: Lots of different kinds of living things.
Let’s Talk About It!
- Can you name any endangered animals? (Examples: pandas, tigers, elephants.)
- Why is it important to protect these animals?
- Have you ever visited a national park? What did you see there?
Let’s Read!
National parks are like safe homes for plants and animals. They are special places where we can see many different kinds of living things. Some animals, like the orangutan, live only in certain forests. If we cut down those forests, the orangutan will lose its home and may disappear.
Questions About the Reading:
- Why are national parks important?
- What animal was mentioned in the reading?
- What happens if the orangutan loses its home?
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short clip of people talking about protecting forests. Focus on words like “trees,” “habitat,” “oxygen,” and “animals.”)
Talk with a Partner!
One of you is a conservationist (someone who protects nature). The other person is asking questions about your work.
Example:
- Person: “What can I do to help protect endangered animals?”
- Conservationist: “You can donate to organizations that protect animal habitats, recycle, and use less water and electricity.”
Homework:
Write a short paragraph about one way we can help protect endangered species.
Extra Fun:
If you can, research an endangered animal from your country or another part of the world. Draw a picture of it and share some facts about it with the class.
