What is an infinitive?
An infinitive is the most basic form of a verb. It usually has the word “to” before it.
- Examples: to eat, to sleep, to dream, to learn
Infinitives as Purpose Powerhouses
Infinitives can act like superheroes in sentences! They can reveal the reason or purpose behind an action.
- Example: I went to the store to buy milk.
- Why did you go to the store? To buy milk!
How to Spot Infinitives of Purpose
- Look for the word “to” followed by a verb.
- Ask yourself, “Why did the subject do this?” If the infinitive answers that question, it’s showing purpose.
Examples:
- She studied hard to pass the test.
- He woke up early to go for a run.
- They saved money to buy a house.
- We came here to learn English.
