Computer Tools: Apps, Websites, and Fixing Problems
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about computer programs and how to fix problems.

- Read about how word processing has changed over time.
- Listen to tips for fixing common computer problems.
- Write an email to ask for help with a computer problem.
Key Words:
- App: A program on your phone or computer that does something special. (Examples: games, music, social media)
- Website: A place on the internet with information or things to buy.
- Browser: A program that lets you look at websites. (Examples: Chrome, Safari)
- Problem: When something goes wrong and doesn’t work right.
- Troubleshooting: Trying to find out what’s wrong and fix it.
- Update: A new version of an app or program that fixes problems and adds new things.

A long time ago, people wrote stories and letters with typewriters. Then, computers came along and we got word processors. Now, we can type on our computers or phones, fix mistakes easily, and even share our work with others online!

One of you is having a problem with their computer. The other is a tech support person trying to help.
Example:
- Person with problem: “My internet is so slow!”
- Tech support: “Have you tried restarting your computer or your modem?”
Homework:
Imagine you’re having trouble with an app on your phone. Write an email to the company’s help center explaining the problem.
Example:
Dear (App Name) Help Center, I’m having a problem with your app. When I try to (explain what you were doing), it (explain what goes wrong). I have tried (explain what you tried to fix it), but it didn’t work. Please help!
