Procedure:
Part 1: Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greeting and Review: Greet students and briefly review previous lessons on paragraph writing.
- Introducing Descriptive Writing: Explain that descriptive writing uses words to create a picture in the reader’s mind. It helps the reader see, hear, smell, taste, and feel what the writer is describing.
Part 2: Modeling and Explanation (10 minutes)
- Sample Description: Choose a picture and write a short descriptive paragraph on the board. Use vivid adjectives and adverbs to paint a clear picture.
- Example: (Describing Angkor Wat)
The ancient temple of Angkor Wat stands majestically amidst a lush green landscape. Its towering spires reach towards the sky, their intricate carvings glistening in the sunlight. The air is filled with the chirping of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves. As I walk through the moss-covered stone archways, I feel a sense of awe and wonder at the incredible craftsmanship of the Khmer people.
- Analyzing the Model: Discuss the use of adjectives and adverbs in the paragraph. Highlight sensory details and how they bring the description to life.
- Adjective and Adverb Word Banks: Create word banks on the board with different categories of adjectives (e.g., color, size, shape, texture) and adverbs (e.g., manner, time, place).
Part 3: Guided Practice (15 minutes)
- Picture Prompts: Show different pictures and guide students in brainstorming descriptive words and phrases for each.
- Sentence Creation: Help students create simple sentences using the vocabulary they have brainstormed. Encourage them to use a variety of adjectives and adverbs.
Part 4: Independent Practice (15 minutes)
- Worksheet or Writing Prompt: Provide a worksheet with descriptive writing prompts or have students choose a picture to describe.
- Differentiation: Offer different levels of prompts:
- Beginner: Describe your favorite animal using 3-5 sentences.
- Intermediate: Describe your dream home using sensory details.
- Advanced: Describe a memorable experience using vivid language.
Part 5: Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)
- Pair Sharing: Have students share their descriptions with a partner and provide feedback.
- Whole Class Sharing: Invite volunteers to share their descriptions with the class.
- Teacher Feedback: Provide specific praise and constructive criticism, focusing on the use of adjectives and adverbs, sensory details, and overall clarity.
Extension Activities:

- Collaborative Writing: Have students work in groups to describe a shared experience or a picture.
- Creative Writing: Encourage students to write a short story or poem using descriptive language.
