Making Good Habits Stick!
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about habits.
- Talk about good habits we want to start and how to keep doing them.
- Read about someone who successfully built a new habit.
- Listen to someone talk about making small changes.
- Write about a plan for a new habit.
Key Words:
- Habit: Something you do often without thinking.
- Routine: Things you do in the same order every day or week.
- Consistency: Doing something regularly, not giving up.
- Accountability Partner: Someone who helps you stay on track with your goals.
- Small Steps: Starting with little changes to make a new habit easier.
Let’s Talk About It!
- What are some good habits you have? (Examples: brushing teeth, exercising, eating vegetables.)
- What’s one new habit you’d like to start? (Examples: drinking more water, waking up early, learning a new skill.)
- Why do you think it’s hard to make a new habit stick? (It takes time and effort, it’s easy to forget or get discouraged.)
Let’s Read a Story!
Alex wanted to write a book. They knew it would be hard to write every day, so they decided to start small. They set a goal to write just one paragraph each day. They also told a friend about their goal to help them stay on track. Little by little, the paragraphs turned into a whole book!
Questions About the Story:
- What did Alex want to do?
- How did they make their habit easier to stick to?
- Who helped Alex stay consistent?
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short clip of someone explaining how small changes can lead to big results over time.)
Talk with a Partner!
One of you wants to start a new habit (like exercising more). The other gives advice.
Example:
- Person 1: “I want to exercise more, but I always find excuses not to.”
- Person 2: “Maybe you should start small. Try walking for 15 minutes every day. You can also find a friend to exercise with you, so you can encourage each other.”
Homework:
Think of a new habit you want to start. Write a plan for how you’ll make it stick. Include what you’ll do, when you’ll do it, and who will help you.
Example:
My Habit Plan:
- Goal: Eat a healthy breakfast every day.
- Steps: Buy healthy breakfast food, set the table the night before, set an alarm to remind me to eat.
- Accountability Partner: My sister will have breakfast with me.
Extra Fun:
Make a habit tracker! You can use a calendar or a special notebook to check off every day you do your new habit.
