Good Habits for a Good Life
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about healthy habits.
- Talk about our daily routines and how they make us feel.
- Read about a person with good habits.
- Listen to someone explain why different types of habits are important.
- Write about a habit we want to start or improve.
Key Words:
- Habit: Something you do often without thinking.
- Routine: Things you do regularly at the same time.
- Physical habit: A habit that helps your body stay healthy. (Example: exercising)
- Mental habit: A habit that helps your brain stay sharp. (Example: reading, puzzles)
- Emotional habit: A habit that helps you feel good and happy. (Example: spending time with loved ones, practicing gratitude)
Let’s Talk About It!
- What are some healthy habits you already have?
- What’s one habit you would like to change or start?
- How do you feel after you exercise or read a book?
Let’s Read a Story!
Mark starts his day with a jog in the park. He then takes a few minutes to breathe deeply and relax. At lunchtime, he reads a book while eating a healthy salad. Before bed, he writes down three things he is thankful for. Mark feels happy and healthy because of his good habits.
Questions About the Story:
- What are some of Mark’s healthy habits?
- Why do you think he does these things?
- How do you think his habits make him feel?
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short clip of someone explaining why it’s good to have a mix of physical, mental, and emotional habits in our lives.)
Talk with a Partner!
One of you is a health coach. The other person wants to improve their habits. The coach gives advice.
Example:
- Client: “I’m always so tired, and I don’t have any energy.”
- Coach: “Maybe you should try exercising more. Even a short walk every day can help.”
Homework:
Write a short paragraph about one habit you want to start or improve. What will you do to make it part of your routine?
Extra Fun:
Make a list of three new habits you want to try this week. Share your list with the class!
