Let’s Play! Imagine and Explore in Role-Playing Games
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about tabletop role-playing games (TRPGs).
- Talk about what makes TRPGs fun and different from other games.
- Read a short story to imagine being in a TRPG.
- Listen to people playing a TRPG.
- Create a character for a TRPG.
Key Words:
- Role-playing game (RPG): A game where you pretend to be someone else.
- Tabletop RPG (TRPG): An RPG played sitting around a table with friends.
- Character: The person you pretend to be in the game.
- Dungeon Master (DM): The person who leads the game and tells the story.
- Dice: Objects you roll to decide what happens in the game.
- Adventure: An exciting story with challenges and surprises.
What Makes TRPGs Special?
- You can be anyone you want! A brave warrior, a clever wizard, or anything else.
- You work together with your friends to tell a story.
- The dice add excitement and surprise. You never know what will happen next!
Let’s Read a Story!
Imagine you are in a group of friends. You have a special map that leads to a hidden treasure. It’s getting dark, and you’re in a scary forest. What do you do?
Questions about the Story:
- Where are you in the story?
- What are you looking for?
- What would your character do next?
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short clip of people playing a TRPG. Pay attention to how they describe their characters and what they decide to do.)
Talk with a Partner!
One of you is a player, and the other is the Dungeon Master (DM). The DM describes a scene, and the player says what their character would do.
Example:
- DM: “You see a big, scary monster! What do you do?”
- Player: “My character is brave! I draw my sword and attack!”
Homework:
Create a character for a TRPG!
- Give your character a name and describe what they look like.
- What are their special skills? Are they strong? Smart? Sneaky?
- What do they want? Are they looking for treasure? Trying to save the world?
Extra Fun:
If you can, play a simple TRPG with your friends! It’s a fun way to practice English and be creative.
