What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have a passion for painting, a love of football, or a talent for playing the guitar? Today, we’re going to dive into the world of hobbies and interests. We’ll learn new vocabulary, share our passions, and even discover new activities we might want to try!
Hobbies Galore!
There are countless hobbies and interests out there, each offering a unique way to express ourselves and have fun. Let’s start by expanding our vocabulary:
- Vocabulary Expansion:

Active Hobbies:
- Sports: football (soccer), basketball, volleyball, swimming, cycling, martial arts
- Outdoor activities: hiking, camping, fishing, gardening
- Dance: traditional Khmer dance, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary

Creative Hobbies:
- Arts and crafts: painting, drawing, sculpting, pottery, knitting, sewing
- Music: playing an instrument, singing, composing
- Writing: stories, poems, journaling

Other Hobbies:
- Reading
- Cooking/baking
- Board games/video games
- Learning new languages
- Collecting (stamps, coins, etc.)
- Hobby Dictionary:
- Create a personal hobby dictionary.
- Choose 5-7 hobbies that interest you.
- Write the name of each hobby, a brief description, and an example sentence.
- Share your dictionary with a partner and see if they have any similar interests.
Share Your Passion!
Now it’s time to share your hobbies with the world (or at least your classmates)!

Hobby Presentations:
- Choose your favorite hobby from your list.
- Prepare a short presentation (3-5 minutes) about it.
- Include information like:
- What is your hobby?
- How did you get started?
- Why do you enjoy it?
- What skills or benefits have you gained from it?
- (Optional) Show a picture or demonstration of your hobby.

- Pair up with a classmate.
- Interview each other about your hobbies, asking follow-up questions to learn more.
- Take notes on your partner’s answers and share a summary with the class.
New Horizons: Hobbies to Explore
Have you ever wanted to try something new? Now is your chance to expand your horizons!
- Brainstorming:
- Think of 3-5 hobbies or activities you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t yet.
- Share your list with a partner or the class.
- Discuss why these hobbies interest you.
- Make a plan to try at least one new hobby this month.
Challenge Yourself!
- Hobby Swap: Teach your partner a skill or activity related to your favorite hobby (e.g., a few dance steps, a simple cooking recipe).
- Research Project: Choose a unique hobby or activity practiced in Cambodia or another country. Research it and present your findings to the class.
Did You Know? In Cambodia, playing chess is a popular pastime, often enjoyed in public parks or coffee shops.
