Today, we’re going to talk about our families. Family is very important in Cambodian culture, and it’s always fun to share stories and information about our loved ones. Let’s learn how to talk about our families in English!
Who’s in Your Family?
Everyone has a family, right? Families come in all shapes and sizes. Some families are big, and some are small. Some families have lots of children, while others have only a few.
- Vocabulary Time:
- Let’s learn some important words for family members:
- mother (or mom)
- father (or dad)
- sister
- brother
- grandmother (or grandma)
- grandfather (or grandpa)
- aunt
- uncle
- cousin
- Can you think of any other family members?
- Let’s learn some important words for family members:
- Your Turn!
- Now, take a piece of paper and draw your family tree. Draw a circle for each person in your family and write their name inside. Use lines to connect the circles and show how everyone is related.
Let’s Introduce Our Families!
Now that you have your family tree, it’s time to share it with a partner.
- Introducing Your Family:
- Point to each person on your family tree and say their name.
- You can say, “This is my mother. Her name is Srey Mom.”
- You can also tell your partner a little bit about each person, like their age or what they do for work.
- Asking Questions:
- Ask your partner questions about their family, like:
- “How many brothers and sisters do you have?”
- “What does your father do?”
- “Do you live with your grandparents?”
- Ask your partner questions about their family, like:
- Listening and Responding:
- Listen carefully to your partner’s answers.
- You can ask follow-up questions to learn more about their family.
- Switch Roles: After you have introduced your family, it’s your partner’s turn!
Fun Activity: Family Charades
Let’s play a game to practice the family vocabulary we learned today! Your teacher will write the names of different family members on pieces of paper. Each student will take turns picking a paper and acting out the word without speaking. The rest of the class will guess the family member.
