Welcome back, home explorers! π‘
Today, we’re going to talk about our homes β the places where we live, relax, and spend time with our families. We’ll practice describing our homes and using vocabulary related to houses and furniture. Let’s make ourselves at home with this lesson!
Room by Room
Every home is unique! Some have many rooms, while others are small and cozy. Let’s start by thinking about the different rooms in our homes.
-
Vocabulary Time:
- Rooms: bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, dining room, garden, balcony, etc.
- Furniture: bed, sofa, chair, table, desk, wardrobe, bookshelf, etc.
- Appliances: refrigerator, stove, television, fan, air conditioner, etc.
- Other: window, door, wall, floor, roof, etc.
-
My Home Blueprint:
- Grab a piece of paper and draw a simple floor plan of your house.
- Draw squares or rectangles to represent the different rooms.
- Label each room with its name in English.
A Tour of My Home
Now, let’s give our partner a virtual tour of our homes!
- Describing Your Home:
- Tell your partner about your home, using the vocabulary you just learned.
- Mention the number of rooms, the types of furniture in each room, and any special features your home has.
- Example: “My house has four rooms: a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and my bedroom. In the living room, there is a big sofa and a TV. My bedroom has a bed, a desk, and a bookshelf…”
- Asking Questions:
- After your partner describes their home, ask questions to learn more.
- Examples:
- “What color are the walls in your bedroom?”
- “Do you have a garden?”
- “What’s your favorite room in the house and why?”
- Switch Roles: Take turns being the tour guide and the visitor.
My Favorite Spot
Every home has a special place that we love. Maybe it’s a cozy corner to read, a sunny spot in the garden, or a comfortable chair by the window.
- Think and Share: What’s your favorite place in your home? Why do you like it so much?
- Conversation Starters:
- “My favorite place in my home is the…”
- “I like to spend time there because…”
Did You Know? In Cambodia, many houses have a spirit house called a “Praphum” in their yard or garden. It’s a small shrine where people offer food and incense to the spirits that protect the home.
Your Turn!
Keep practicing describing your home and talking about the things you like about it. You can even take pictures of your home and share them with your classmates! The more you talk about your home in English, the more comfortable you’ll become with the language.
Extra Challenge:
Can you describe your home in more detail? Use adjectives to describe the colors, sizes, and shapes of the rooms and furniture.
