Fun and Friends at the Community Center
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about community centers.
- Talk about activities and classes you can do at community centers.
- Read about a community center.
- Listen to an interview about a community center.
- Think about what you would like to do at a community center.
Key Words:
- Community Center: A place where people can do activities together.
- Class: A time when people learn something together.

Let’s Talk About It!
- Have you ever been to a community center? What did you do there?
- What are some things you like to do with other people? (Play games, learn new things, have fun!)
- If you could choose one thing to do at a community center, what would it be? (Take a cooking class, play basketball, join a book club.)
Let’s Read a Story!
The Elmwood Community Center is a fun place in the neighborhood. It has classes for all ages, like painting and dancing. It even has a big party every summer called the Summer Fiesta! People come to the community center to make new friends and learn new things.
Questions About the Story:
- What is the name of the community center?
- What are some of the classes they offer?
- What is the name of the big summer party?
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short interview with someone who works at a community center.)
Talk with a Partner!
One of you is new to the neighborhood. The other is telling you about the community center. Ask and answer questions about what you can do there.
Example:
- New Person: “I’m new here. What kind of things happen at the community center?”
- Neighbor: “Oh, it’s a great place! They have all sorts of classes and events. Would you like to hear about some of them?”
Homework:
Imagine you work at a community center. Draw a poster for a new class or event you want to have.
Extra Fun:
If you can, visit your local community center! Ask about the classes and events they offer. Maybe you’ll find something you want to try!
