More Than Just Books: Exploring the Library
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about the library.
- Talk about what you can do at the library.
- Read a story about someone’s library visit.
- Listen to a conversation about the library.
- Write a thank you letter to your library.
Key Words:
- Library: A place where you can borrow books, movies, and other things.
- Library card: A special card that lets you borrow things from the library.
- Borrow: To take something from the library and bring it back later.
- Return: To bring something back to the library after you borrow it.
- Bookshelf: A shelf where books are kept.
- Librarian: The person who works at the library and helps you find things.
Let’s Talk About It!
- Have you ever been to a library? What did you do there?
- Do you have a library card? If not, how can you get one?
- What are some things you can do at the library besides borrowing books? (Use computers, attend programs, study, read magazines.)
Let’s Read a Story!
Maria went to the library to learn about computers. The librarian showed her how to use the internet. Then, Maria borrowed some books to read at home. She had a great time at the library!
Questions about the Story:
- Why did Maria go to the library?
- Who helped Maria at the library?
- What did Maria do at the library?
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short conversation between a librarian and a person asking about library programs.)
Talk with a Partner!
One of you is a librarian. The other is a new person at the library. Ask and answer questions about the library and what it offers.
Example:
- New Person: “Hello, I’m new here. Can I borrow movies from the library?”
- Librarian: “Yes, you can! You just need a library card. Would you like me to help you get one?”
Homework:
Write a short letter to your library. Thank them for a program you liked or for something they helped you with.
Extra Fun:
If you can, visit your local library. Take a look around and see what it offers. Maybe you can find a new book to read or attend a fun program!
