Adjectives: The Spice of Language

What are adjectives?

Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. They give us more information about the nouns they describe, making our language more interesting and vivid.

Types of Adjectives

1. Descriptive Adjectives: These adjectives describe qualities or characteristics of a noun. They answer questions like “what kind?”

   • Examples: big, small, old, new, happy, sad, blue, delicious

   • The blue car is fast.

   • She has a friendly smile.

2. Quantitative Adjectives: These adjectives tell us about the quantity or amount of a noun. They answer questions like “how many?” or “how much?”

   • Examples: one, two, three, many, few, some, all

   • I have three books.

   • There are many people in the park.

3. Demonstrative Adjectives: These adjectives point out specific nouns.

   • Examples: this, that, these, those

   • This house is beautiful.

   • Those flowers are yellow.

4. Possessive Adjectives: These adjectives show ownership or possession.

   • Examples: my, your, his, her, its, our, their

   • My cat is black.

   • Their house is big.

5. Interrogative Adjectives: These adjectives are used in questions.

   • Examples: which, what, whose

   • Which movie do you want to see?

   • What color is your shirt?

6. Distributive Adjectives: These adjectives refer to individual members of a group.

   • Examples: each, every, either, neither

   • Each student received a certificate.

   • Every house on the street is painted white.
