School Talk: Words We Use at School
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words about things and people at school.
- Talk about school subjects, grades, and future plans.
- Read about a day at a high school.
- Listen to someone talk about choosing the right major in college.
- Write about choosing what to study.
Key Words:
- Teacher: Someone who helps students learn.
- Student: Someone who goes to school to learn.
- Subject: A specific topic that is studied in school (e.g., math, science, history).
- Grade: A letter or number that shows how well you did in a class.
- Major: The main subject you study in college.
- Minor: Another subject you study in college, but not as much as your major.
More School Words:
- Classroom: The room where you have classes.
- Textbook: A book used for studying a subject.
- Principal: The person in charge of the school.
- Homework: Schoolwork you do at home.
- Test/Exam: A way for teachers to check what you’ve learned.
Let’s Talk About It!
- What is your favorite subject in school? Why?
- What are some things you do in the classroom? (Read, write, listen to the teacher, work with classmates.)
- If you could go to university, what would you want to study?
Let’s Read!
At Greenwood High School, teachers help students learn many different subjects. The principal makes sure everything runs smoothly. Students work hard in their classes to get good grades. Some students are even thinking about what they want to study in college!
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short clip of a counselor talking to a student about choosing a major. Focus on the words “major,” “minor,” and “interests.”)
Talk with a Partner!
One of you is a student. The other is a teacher. The student is asking the teacher for help choosing a major.
Example:
- Student: “I’m interested in science and art. What should I study?”
- Teacher: “You could major in biology and minor in art. That way you can learn about both of your interests.”
Homework:
Write a short paragraph about what you want to study in the future. Why are you interested in that subject? What job would you like to have?
Extra Fun:
If you can, look online for pictures of different university campuses. Which one looks the most interesting to you?
