What is an adverb phrase?
An adverb phrase is a group of words that work together to act like a single adverb. They can tell us how, when, where, why, or to what extent an action happens.
The Heart of an Adverb Phrase
Just like adjective phrases, adverb phrases have a core word – the adverb itself – that does the main describing job.
- Example: He ran quickly.
Building Adverb Phrases
To add more detail, we can build around the adverb using:
- Other adverbs: He ran very quickly.
- Prepositional phrases: He ran quickly down the street.
- Infinitive phrases: He ran quickly to catch the bus.
Examples:
- Manner: She danced gracefully across the stage.
- Time: We will meet at noon tomorrow.
- Place: They live in a small house by the river.
- Frequency: He goes to the gym twice a week.
- Degree: She is almost finished with her work.
