Lesson 5: Sentence Building Blocks
Learning Objectives:
- Students will be able to identify the subject, verb, and object in a sentence.
- Students will be able to write simple sentences with the correct word order (Subject-Verb-Object).
- Students will be able to use common verbs and nouns in sentences.
- Students will be able to express simple actions and states of being in writing.
Materials:
- Whiteboard or chart paper
- Markers or pens
- Picture flashcards of people, animals, and objects
- Sentence strip templates (Subject, Verb, Object)
- Worksheet with jumbled sentences
Procedure:
Part 1: Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greeting and Review: Greet students and review previous lesson’s concept of writing about favorite things.
- Introducing Sentences: Explain that sentences are made up of words that work together to express a complete thought.
- Building Blocks: Introduce the concept of a sentence having three main building blocks: the subject (who or what the sentence is about), the verb (action or state of being), and the object (what receives the action).
Part 2: Identifying Sentence Parts (10 minutes)
- Picture Prompt: Show a picture flashcard (e.g., a boy eating an apple). Ask, “What do you see?” Elicit the answer “boy.” Write “boy” on the board and label it as the subject. Ask, “What is the boy doing?” Elicit the answer “eating.” Write “eating” and label it as the verb. Ask, “What is the boy eating?” Elicit the answer “apple.” Write “apple” and label it as the object.
- More Examples: Repeat with a few more picture flashcards, helping students identify the subject, verb, and object in each sentence.
- Sentence Strips: Use sentence strip templates to visually demonstrate the order of subject, verb, and object. Have students rearrange jumbled sentence strips to form correct sentences.
Part 3: Guided Practice (15 minutes)
- Matching: Provide a list of subjects, verbs, and objects. Have students match them to form correct sentences (e.g., “The bird sings a song,” “The dog chases the ball”).
- Fill in the Blanks: Give sentences with a missing subject, verb, or object. Have students fill in the blank with an appropriate word.
- Picture Prompts: Show another set of pictures and have students write complete sentences describing what they see, using the SVO structure.
Part 4: Independent Practice (15 minutes)
- Worksheet: Distribute a worksheet with jumbled sentences for students to unscramble and write in the correct SVO order.
- Creative Writing: Have students write a few sentences about their daily routine or what they did over the weekend, focusing on using the SVO structure.
Part 5: Sharing and Feedback (5 minutes)
- Invite students to share their sentences with a partner or the class.
- Provide positive feedback and gentle corrections as needed.
- Celebrate their success in writing complete sentences!
Example Worksheet:
Unscramble these sentences:
- eats/ The girl/ a banana.
- reads/ a book/ The boy.
- The cat/ sleeps/ on the mat.
Differentiation:
- Support: Provide more picture prompts, sentence starters, or word banks for students who need additional help.
- Challenge: Encourage students to write longer sentences with more details or ask them to add adjectives to their sentences.
Outro:
