Beyond Happy and Sad: A Deeper Look at Our Feelings
Learning Goals:
- Learn new words to describe emotions beyond just “happy” and “sad.”
- Talk about how our feelings can change over time.
- Read a story about someone’s emotional week.
- Listen to a conversation about different types of anger.
- Write about a time when you felt a strong emotion.
Key Words:
- Irritated: A little bit annoyed or bothered.
- Furious: Very, very angry.
- Content: Feeling peaceful and happy with how things are.
- Ecstatic: Super excited and happy.
- Disappointed: Sad because something didn’t go the way you hoped.
- Heartbroken: Very sad and upset, usually because of a loss.
Let’s Talk About It!
- Can you remember a time when you felt really happy? What happened? (Use “ecstatic” if you were super happy!)
- Have you ever been very disappointed? What happened?
- What are some things that make you feel irritated? (Examples: slow internet, noisy neighbors)
Let’s Read a Story!
Lena had a week of ups and downs. On Monday, she woke up late and felt irritated. But by lunchtime, she finished a big project at work and felt content. On Wednesday, she got a surprise gift in the mail and was ecstatic! But then, on Friday, a fun trip she was planning got cancelled, and she felt heartbroken.
Questions About the Story:
- How did Lena feel on Monday?
- What made her feel happy on Wednesday?
- Why was she heartbroken at the end of the week?
Listen and Learn!
(Teacher plays a short conversation about the difference between feeling irritated and feeling angry. Talk about how these feelings are similar but not the same.)
